Adaptive Substance Use Patterns

Substance use often begins as a way to cope

to soothe, or to find comfort in what feels unbearable. Therapy creates room to look beneath the surface, to understand what your use has been protecting, and to explore new ways of finding safety and relief. The goal isn’t punishment or shame, but curiosity and care for what your system has been trying to manage all along. I view “addiction” as a brilliant coping strategy that may no longer serve you today, but has done whatever it could to get you where you are today. How amazing is that?

How this helps you:

  • Clarifies the emotional purpose behind substance use
  • Encourages self-compassion instead of self-judgment
  • Builds alternative coping strategies
  • Strengthens emotional regulation and distress tolerance
  • Restores trust in your body and nervous system
  • Supports recovery at your own pace
